So how many Black owned kidswear brands will rise from the H&M racist gaffe?
Every now and then we get outraged, we go on overdrive. We shout, we blame, we throw words, we march and … then it ends. The cycle continues.
In less than 6 months, 3 different brands has pulled the racist tact to get you becoming their unpaid salesperson. And each time it has worked perfectly well. Folks will share, tweet, tag and make stories promoting a brand they claim to want to bash. But hey! You really do have a choice.
You have the power to choose what you give your time, energy and timeline. You can choose what you promote. You can promote this magazine that gives you positive representation or you can choose to share a racist brand that drains you.
We really do have a choice. Unfortunately every now and again we are caught in the trap of helping a dying racist brand to surface in the limelight, they make millions and we just suck it in waiting for the next one to shout about.
We can really do better.
How many of you have heard of and shared about Divas of Colour? How many of you have heard of and shared The A Concept by Afua Sam? How many of you have heard of and shared C. Hub magazine? Have you heard of and shared on your timeline about any books and stories that puts a fellow black person’s business in the limelight.
We are shamelessly giving away our power and purposely drag each other down with our crab mentality. People we can do better. Use your time and energy to search out great brands by black people to promote , share and spend your money on. We need to now stop with the same tact that’s never worked and will never work for us.
Spend your money ethically within your own community and with brands that genunely respect you and support you such as, Worldremit, Chikas, etc.
Put your hand where your mouth is. People think! Think before you share. Ask yourself what I’m about to share how will it empower my identity? What footprint am I leaving on my timeline?
Be wise people. Share what you want to represent you. Buy Black! Stop these racist multimillion dollar brands in their track with your money and not just words.
Boycot!
